Wait until the Gorilla gets tired!

This week's subject is determination. Merriam Webster says determination is :
  1. a quality that makes you continue trying to do or achieve something that is difficult
  2.  the act of finding out or calculating something
  3. the act of officially deciding something
Determination quite literally is the engine that drives us. It helps ensure success whereas lack thereof most often leads to failure.

“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack in will.”  ― Vince Lombardi

Then there's one of my favorite quotes - “Success is a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.” ― Robert Strauss The visuals on that one are delightful to an old high-school and college wrestler. Especially a heavyweight with 37" sleeves (aka long arms) like me.

Tom Petty gets it -

Then there's this anthem to determination:

Of course one's determination to complete a task only comes after one calculates the need to perform that task and makes the determination to begin the task.  Life is so confusing sometimes.

That's a quick shack attack on the subject.  Check out what the other LBC folk have to say on determination.

  1. Yes, if there ever was an LBC topic that needed to be attacked this was it. You have done it your way and I in mine. I have been more verbose!

  2. I used to tell my kids, "You are just being stubborn! But you don't realize where you got that stubbornness from, you got it from me! And I can be just as stubborn as you!" :)

  3. I have never fought any gorillas, but hit a few brick walls along the way, but dogged determination saw me through. Somehow it is the small pebble sized problems that caused me the problems.

  4. Shackman, I love this post. You have painted a clear, colorful photograph of determination.
Since I was a young girl I have said, "Everything in life comes down to how bad you want it."
